How Much Reclaimed Wood Do I Need?
Accent Wall Calculator
Formula: (Wall Height x Wall Width) ÷ 0.85 = Square Feet Needed
Example: 8' x 12' wall = 96 sqft ÷ 0.85 = 113 sqft needed
Add 10-15% for waste and cuts
Cost Example (8'x12' wall):
Using 4" barnwood bundles: 6 bundles x $90 = $540
Using coal-fired steel: 113 sqft x $3.50 = $395.50
Dining Table Calculator
8-foot live-edge table (standard 36"-40" width):
Slab dimensions: 8' x 3' x 2" thick = approximately 48 board feet
Walnut @ $22/bf = $1,056
Cottonwood @ $6/bf = $288
Mantel Length Guide
Small fireplace (3-4 feet wide): 5-6 foot beam
Standard fireplace (5-6 feet wide): 7-8 foot beam

What Is Coal-Fired Steel and Why Use It?
Coal-fired steel panels are salvaged from a decommissioned Colorado coal power plant. These Core-10 steel sheets develop a unique rust patina over years of exposure to coal processing environments — creating texture and color variation that cannot be replicated.
Benefits of Steel Accent Walls
No nail holes: Clean surface, structurally rigid
Weldable: Can be custom fabricated into shapes
Unique patina: Every piece is different
Fire-resistant: Natural benefit of steel
Industrial aesthetic: Perfect for modern rustic, loft, or brewery design
Alternative to tin: More substantial than corrugated metal
Where to Use Steel Panels
Restaurant feature walls
Brewery tap room cladding
Office accent walls
Residential industrial design
Fireplace surrounds (heat-resistant)
Outdoor projects (naturally weathering)
Price: $3.50 per square foot (significantly cheaper than new Core-10 steel)
Boxcar Flooring: Colorado's Hidden Gem
Antique train car flooring is one of the rarest reclaimed materials available. These boards were milled from old-growth timber 80-100 years ago and have been walked on, loaded, and weathered inside moving railcars for decades. Very few antique boxcars still exist, making this material extremely limited.
Why Boxcar Flooring Is Special
Pre-dimensioned: Already flat, smooth, and uniform thickness (2.25")
Extremely dense: Old-growth hardwood with tight grain
Authentic distressing: Wear patterns from cargo loading
Multiple species: Oak, rock maple, pine, apitong, hickory
Perfect width: 12" boards are ideal for tables and countertops
Best Uses for Boxcar Flooring
Dining table tops (8-foot boards fit standard tables perfectly)
Coffee tables
Butcher block countertops (when properly sealed)
Floating shelves
Benches and entryway furniture
Price: $200-$300 per 8-foot board depending on species

How to Finish Reclaimed Wood
Leave Raw (No Finish)
Best For: Accent walls, decorative beams, low-touch applications Pros: Authentic patina, easy maintenance Cons: Splinter risk, dust accumulation
Oil Finish (Tung Oil, Danish Oil)
Best For: Mantels, shelves, furniture Pros: Enhances grain, easy to repair, natural look Cons: Requires reapplication every 1-2 years
Rubio Monocoat or Waterlox
Best For: Tabletops, countertops, high-use surfaces Pros: Food-safe, water-resistant, durable Cons: More expensive than oil
Polyurethane (Water-Based or Oil-Based)
Best For: Floors, bar tops, high-wear surfaces Pros: Maximum protection, long-lasting Cons: Plastic-like sheen, harder to repair
Wax Finish
Best For: Decorative pieces, mantels Pros: Soft luster, easy application Cons: Low protection, frequent reapplication
Steel panels require no finish — the rust patina is permanent and continues to age naturally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is reclaimed wood safe for indoor use?
Yes. All wood at Revolve Reclaimed is cleaned and denailed. Live-edge slabs are kiln-dried to eliminate pests and reduce moisture. Colorado's dry climate naturally deters wood-boring insects.
Can reclaimed wood be used in kitchens and bathrooms?
Yes, when properly sealed with food-safe, water-resistant finish (Rubio Monocoat, Waterlox, or water-based polyurethane). Boxcar flooring and cargo flooring are excellent for countertops.
How do I transport large beams?
Beams are heavy (80-200+ lbs). We recommend pickup trucks or trailers. Revolve Reclaimed can help load materials. Local delivery may be available (call 720-236-0454 for details).
Do you have inventory in stock or is it custom order?
All inventory is in stock and available for immediate purchase. However, reclaimed materials are limited-supply — once sold out, we must wait for new salvage projects. Follow us on Facebook (facebook.com/revolvereclaimed2) for new arrival updates.
Can you cut beams to custom lengths?
We can cut 1911 Douglas Fir beams for $40 per cut. For other materials, bring your own saw or hire a contractor. We do not currently offer full milling services.
What if I don't know what I need?
Visit in person! Bring photos of your space, room dimensions, and design inspiration. Our team can help match materials to your project, style, and budget.
Can steel panels be installed outdoors?
Yes. Core-10 steel and galvanized steel are weather-resistant. The patina will continue to develop naturally over time.
