About twenty million pounds of turf, still in service.

Since 2014 we have taken synthetic athletic turf off fields across Colorado and put it back to work in yards, arenas, kennels and batting cages. This page sets out what that adds up to, how the figure was arrived at, and what it deliberately leaves out.

Since 2014 we have kept roughly 20 million pounds of synthetic turf in service. Here is how that number is built — and what it leaves out.

FIG. I.2The Short Version

A number you can check beats a number you can't.

Most diversion claims are a single large figure with nothing behind it. We would rather publish a smaller number and show the whole calculation, because the only version of this that is worth anything to a grant reviewer or a sustainability officer is the version they can take apart.

So: every input below is stated. Where we had a range, we used the low end. Where we were not certain material stayed in service, we took it out. The result is a figure we think is conservative — and if it is wrong, it is wrong in the direction of understating the work.

Turf is the stream we have measured properly, so it is the stream this page is about. Across every material since 2012 — wood, steel, carpet tile, slate and the rest — our long-standing house estimate is 38 million pounds and up. That figure is an estimate built up over years of operating, not a documented calculation, and we do not present it as one. The turf number below is the one with the arithmetic attached.

Turf is weighed on a pallet scale in the yard — roughly three representative rolls from each incoming field. Those weights, the number of fields, and the typical size of a project are the only inputs. Here is the chain.

    On ~15% of projects a school keeps ~20% of its turf for reuse on site. We coordinate that, but we do not count its weight as ours.

If you don't believe the midpoint

Run the same chain on the lowest field count in our range rather than the middle of it — 98 fields instead of 122 — and it comes out at approximately15.9 million pounds. That is the floor. We publish the midpoint because we think it is the fair reading, but the floor is the number to argue with.

What the number doesn't count.

Three categories of material are diverted through us and excluded from the figure above on purpose. Two of them we simply cannot weigh; the third is not ours to claim.

  • Bulk infill

    Most infill comes out of a field before we ever receive the turf. Roughly half goes back into the replacement field; the rest is sold for uses like horse arenas or donated to horse rehabilitation groups. It is being reused, but we have no historical weights for it, so none of it is in the 20 million.

  • Turf schools keep

    On about 15% of projects the school holds back around 20% of the removed turf for other areas on the property. We coordinate it and it stays in service, and it is still deducted from our number rather than added to it.

  • Everything that is not turf

    Wood, steel, carpet tile, slate, doors, hardware. All of it leaves the yard for a second life and none of it is counted here, because we have not measured it to the standard this page is held to.

The rest of the yard.

Turf is the stream with a method behind it. It is not the only thing that leaves here for a second life. We have not put weights against the following, and would rather name them plainly than attach a figure we cannot stand behind.

Reclaimed wood

Beams, dimensional lumber, flooring and slabs out of Front Range barns, warehouses and homes. Milled by Colorado locals and sold off our racks or built into work in the shop.

Structural steel

Plate, angle, pipe and fixtures pulled from deconstruction jobs, sold on to fabricators and builders rather than going to a scrap run.

Carpet tile

Commercial carpet tile recovered from office refits — one of the harder streams to place, and one of the reasons we started taking it in.

Slate, stone & fixtures

Roofing slate, stone, doors, windows and hardware. Small by weight, but the material with the longest second life of anything in the yard.

If you need it on paper.

Contractors chasing a diversion target, and clients with sustainability reporting to file, normally need paperwork rather than a receipt. We can provide weight tickets,reclamation records and waste diversion reports for material that comes through us — ask at the start of a job and we will set it up from the beginning, which is far easier than reconstructing it afterwards.
