Why there is a finite amount of this
Boxcars stopped being built with wood floors a long time ago. Everything that exists is already in service or already out of it — this is not a material anybody is producing.
Getting it out is the harder part. When a rail company retires a car, scrapping the whole thing costs less than stripping it first, so the floor goes in the shredder with everything else unless somebody moves fast. Our supplier is the one who moves fast, and he is the only person doing it on this side of the Mississippi. He gets a window. When a truck arrives here, that is what there is.
What decades of freight does to a board
Every one of these is marked differently, because every one of them hauled something different. Cuts, gouges, strap scars, dark patches where something sat and leaked, grain lifted where a load dragged. You are not choosing a species so much as choosing a board.
Come look at them. This is not a material to order by description.
Thickness is the point
Most reclaimed flooring is three-quarters of an inch and needs a substrate. At 2.25 inches a single boxcar board is a finished countertop on its own. It takes an oil finish beautifully, and a cut end is worth leaving exposed.
We have built a lot of boxcar counters in our own shop. It is the material we get asked about most after the beams.
Before you come
Call 720-236-0454 and check what is on the rack. Bring straps and something that can carry a nine-foot plank. When it’s gone, it’s gone — and with this one that is not a figure of speech.

What is boxcar flooring?
It is the heavy plank decking out of a rail freight car — rock maple or oak, 2.25 inches thick and 12 inches wide. Boxcars have not been built with wood floors for decades, so every board that exists is already out there. Nobody is making more.
How much does boxcar flooring cost in Denver?
Boxcar flooring at Revolve Reclaimed is $200 for an 8ft board and $240 for a 9ft board, in rock maple or oak. Boards are 12in wide and 2.25in thick and are sold whole.
Why is it so hard to get?
When a rail company retires a car it is cheaper to destroy the whole thing than to strip it. Our supplier gets a narrow window to pull the floor before the car is scrapped, and he is the only one doing it on this side of the Mississippi. When a load comes in, that is the load.
What can you build with boxcar flooring?
Table tops, countertops, bar tops, coffee tables and heavy shelving. At 2.25 inches a single board is a finished top — no lamination, no plywood substrate underneath.
Do you cut boxcar flooring to size?
No. Boxcar is sold by the full board. Bring a saw or a plan, and bring a vehicle that can take a 9-foot plank.
