Oak plank off a Kentucky horse farm fence line. $22.50 a board — 1 inch thick, 6 inches wide, 7 feet long.

Why fence board is worth having

A horse fence board is not a garden fence board. It is sawn heavy because the animal leaning on it is not allowed to break it, and it stands outdoors for decades taking weather on one side only.

That gives you something a mill cannot sell you: a board with two different faces. The show face has gone dark and hard and carries the grain raised by years of sun and rain. The back is still clean sawn oak. One board, two surfaces, and you choose which one the room sees.

Dimensions

Every board is the same: 1in × 6in × 7ft. That consistency matters more than it sounds — a 7 foot board covers a standard wall height in a single run, with no joint across the middle of the wall.

What people build with it

Accent walls and cladding, headboards, shelving, bar and counter fronts, cabinet doors, planter boxes, signage. Cladding is what moves fastest, for the length reason above.

Before you cut it

Brush the face down and look it over before it meets a blade. Fence board lives outdoors and picks up grit, and grit is hard on a saw.

Do not sand the weathered face unless you have decided you want fresh oak, because that surface is the whole point and it does not come back.

FIG. 037.QQuestions

Kentucky Horse Fencing — common questions

How much are Kentucky horse fence boards?

$22.50 each. Every board is oak, 1 inch thick, 6 inches wide and 7 feet long. Sold by the board — there is no minimum and no cutting fee.

What is horse fence board?

The oak plank that runs between posts on a horse farm fence line. It is sawn heavier than a garden fence board because a horse leaning on it has to not break it, and it spends its whole life outdoors taking sun and weather on one face.

Why is one face darker than the other?

The show face has been out in the weather for decades and has gone dark and hard. The back is the sawn face and is still close to fresh oak. Most people build so the weathered side shows, but you have both surfaces in one board.

What do people build with it?

Wall cladding and accent walls, headboards, shelving, bar and counter fronts, cabinet doors, planter boxes and signage. The 7 foot length covers a standard wall height in one run, which is why it goes fastest as cladding.

Does it need cleaning up first?

Brush it down and check for embedded grit before it meets a saw blade — fence board lives outdoors and picks things up. Do not sand the weathered face unless you want to lose it, because that surface is the reason to buy it.
