Full log rounds cut straight across the trunk, 5 inches thick, bark edge left on all the way around. $200 each.

Four diameters on the floor right now: 39.5in, 46.5in, 51in and 53in.

How big these actually are

Photographs flatten them. The largest is 53 inches across — wider than most dining tables are deep, and a genuine two-person lift at five inches thick.

If you are measuring a room for one, measure the room. Do not go by the picture.

Why the cracks are the point

A round dries from the outside in, so it opens radial checks running from the heart out toward the bark. That is not a defect in a cookie, it is what a cookie does.

Most people fill them — clear epoxy, tinted epoxy, or a contrasting pour that follows the crack across the face. It is the same technique as a river table and it suits these better than it suits a straight slab, because the cracks radiate.

If what you want is a perfectly stable round with no movement, buy something else.

What people build with them

Round dining tables, coffee and side tables, bar tops, wall pieces, ceremony and signage rounds. On a steel pedestal or a set of hairpin legs — both of which we stock — one cookie is the entire table.

Before you finish it

Let it acclimatise indoors first. Stabilise the checks you do not want moving. Then finish both faces, not just the top — sealing one side and leaving the other open is the reliable way to turn a flat round into a dished one.

FIG. 038.QQuestions

Cottonwood Cookies — common questions

What is a cottonwood cookie?

A full round cut straight across a cottonwood log, bark edge left on all the way around. Ours are 5 inches thick and run from 39.5 inches to 53 inches across — the largest is comfortably over four feet.

How much is a cottonwood cookie?

$200 each, whatever the diameter. Four sizes are in stock — 39.5in, 46.5in, 51in and 53in.

How big are they really?

Bigger than photographs make them look. The largest is 53 inches across, which is wider than most dining tables are deep. Bring a tape and stand one up against yourself before you decide.

Do they have cracks?

Yes, and they are supposed to. A round dries from the outside in, so radial checks open from the middle towards the edge. Most people fill them with clear or tinted epoxy, which is why river-style pours suit these so well. If you want zero movement, this is not the piece for you.

What do people build with them?

Round dining and coffee tables, low side tables, bar tops, wall pieces, ceremony and signage rounds. On a steel pedestal or a set of hairpin legs, one cookie is the whole table.

How heavy is one?

Heavy. Five inches of green-to-air-dried cottonwood at four feet across is a two-person lift and needs a flat surface in the vehicle. Bring blankets and a friend.

Do I need to do anything to it before I build with it?

Let it acclimatise indoors before you finish it, fill or stabilise the checks you do not want to move, and finish both faces so it dries evenly. Finishing one side only is the fastest way to make a flat round into a dished one.
