What does a custom reclaimed mantel cost?
Most of the price is not the wood — it is the shop work that turns a grey beam into the thing above. Set it up the way you want it and the number builds as you go. Every rate below is off our own 2026 woodshop order form, the one you would sign.

Finishing covers sanding, stain or oil, and sealing. Flattening is separate at $20/LF plus a $60 setup fee. Finish sanding only — all four faces, no stain, no sealer — is charged per board foot instead: $20/bf standard, $50/bf for Montana oak, 1911 beams and heavily textured stock. Anything over 10ft carries $10/LF for every foot over.
Before you order
- All quotes are estimates only and may change based on the actual materials used and the time fabrication takes.
- Reclaimed wood presents unforeseen challenges — hidden hardware, cracking — that can require extra labour. You are told before any extra work happens.
- Natural variation in grain, colour, tone and texture is expected. It is not a defect.
- Production periods are estimates, not guaranteed dates, and only begin once the project is Production Ready — deposit, drawings, measurements and selections all in.
- Revolve Reclaimed does not deliver and does not install.
- All custom orders are final sale.

The most common thing anybody asks us to build. A single reclaimed beam, sized to your fireplace, finished by hand in our shop on South Jason Street.
Raw beam, or finished mantel?
This is the question worth understanding before you price anything, because the finishing usually costs more than the wood.
A beam off our rack is grey, rough sawn or axe hewn, dirty in the checks, and edges chipped. Plenty of people want exactly that and take it home as is — you pay the board-foot price and nothing else.
Finishing means three separate operations. Flattening on a router sled, $20 per linear foot plus a $60 setup, which trues the faces while leaving the ends and the character alone. Sanding, which is what makes the grain legible. Then stain and seal, or an oil finish.

What a real one costs
A 6ft mantel, 6in × 8in, in hand-hewn barn beam, flattened, sanded, stained and sealed, on a floating bracket:
- 24 board feet of beam at $14 — $336
- Flattening on the router sled, 6 linear feet at $20 plus the $60 setup — $180
- Finishing, 6 linear feet at $95 — $570
- Bracket routing and auger holes, over 70in — $225
- The bracket itself — $65 to $165
That is roughly $1,376 to $1,476 for a finished mantel hung with no visible hardware.
A small one costs a lot less, and a raw beam costs less again. This is why we quote rather than list a price: a 3ft shelf out of pine and a 9ft hand-hewn oak mantel are the same product on paper and nothing alike in the shop. Tell us the fireplace and we will tell you the number.
Finish sanding only, with no stain or seal, is charged differently — $20 per board foot for a standard beam, $50 for Montana oak, 1911 stock, or anything heavily textured.
Rubio costs $5 per linear foot more than stain and poly. Tung oil and Danish oil are included in the finishing price.
Every one of these is an estimate. Reclaimed wood hides things — old hardware, a check that opens up under the sled — and we tell you before we do extra work, not after. Final numbers happen in the shop with the actual beam in front of us. Custom work is 50% down, balance at pickup.
Pick your stock
Hand-hewn barn beams — axe-scalloped faces, mortise pockets, peg holes. The classic mantel look.
1911 Union Station fir — old-growth Douglas fir with a documented address and date behind it. For when the story matters as much as the piece.
Live edge slabs — walnut, elm, or ash with a natural edge, for a more contemporary surround.
What to bring us
The width of your firebox opening, the height you want the mantel to sit at, and a photo of the surround. That is enough for us to pull stock that works and cut it to length.
Hanging it
We carry Ultrashelf floating brackets so the mantel appears to grow out of the wall with no visible hardware. We build the piece and supply the bracket; you or your contractor handle wall attachment, since that depends on whether you are going into studs, brick, or stone.

Grain, colour and texture vary from beam to beam. That is the material, not a defect, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Custom Mantels — common questions
How much does a custom reclaimed mantel cost?
It depends on the size and how much finishing you want, which is why we quote rather than list a price. You can buy the beam raw from $6 a board foot and finish it yourself. If you want us to finish it, that runs $72 to $115 per linear foot on top of the wood depending on the stock. A 6ft mantel in hand-hewn barn beam, flattened and fully finished on a bracket, lands around $1,376 to $1,476. A small shelf is a fraction of that. Call 720-236-0454.
What is the difference between a raw beam and a finished mantel?
A raw beam is what it looks like on the rack — grey, rough sawn or hand hewn, dirty in the recesses. Finishing means flattening the faces on a router sled, sanding it out, then staining and sealing or oiling it. That work is most of the cost. A hand-hewn barn beam is $14 per board foot raw; finishing the same beam is $95 per linear foot on top.

How long does a custom mantel take?
It depends on our shop queue and how much finishing the piece needs. Talk to us early if you have a date — a fireplace surround going in on a schedule is worth planning around.
Can I bring my own dimensions?
Yes, and please do. Bring the width of your firebox opening, the height you want the mantel to sit, and a photo of the surround. We will pick stock that fits and cut it to size.
Do you install the mantel?
We build it and can supply the floating brackets to hang it. Most customers or their contractor handle the wall attachment, since it depends on whether you are going into studs, brick, or stone.
